Dear mum,
How are you?
I hope that this letter reaches you on a good day
I’m not really sure how to tell you this
Because I did make a pinky promise
To stay out the slammer
To not let a judge hit the hammer
Mum,
I really did try my best, but none the less
I’m so sorry to tell you this, I been put under arrest
It wasn’t even rush hour
but there was nuff people on the streets
I was just passing through tottenham
after my football coaching with the kids
the people were standing around, shouting
They looked angry
When all of a sudden a police van pull up
three of them jumped out
with dogs and batons
they came straight up to me
one of them held on to me
said they was taking me in
I told them to get off my skin
I aint done nothing
I been at the youth club working
I start to worry. The police aint sorry
Mum, I can’t explain what they did to me
How can I explain how they made me feel?
They spat in my face as they talked some waste
They held dogs on leads, these some bad breed
They grab me by my wrists and they started to twist
They grab me by my neck and I got proper stressed
Mum, I just couldn’t stand there and do nothing
So I told them what I thought of their hypocritical laws
I tried to stroke the animal he went to bite my hand you know
I struggled when they grabbed me cause I know I’m not no baddie
I punched one in the face cause I couldn’t contain my rage
I was vex,
I was so stressed.
More police came
They beat me down
They beat me to the ground
They charged me for assault
They charge me for looting
and I swear I wasn’t involved
My friend thinks they targeted me
because I stood up to speak
when the people protested about the cuts
when the students protested about the fees
Mum, Please don’t worry,
don’t get down and depressed
be strong for me
Love Joe

I didn’t say they excluded me.
I didn’t say they excluded me.
I didn’t say they excluded me.
I didn’t say they excluded me.
I didn’t say they excluded me.
I didn’t say they excluded me.
I didn’t say they excluded me.
